alternatively, for $750 i could pick up a netbook as good as my actual desktop, a 10mp canon, and a 16gb nano 4g, and just keep my treo. but all four of those wouldn't fit into the same pocket.
400 - asus Eee 1000ha - 1.6ghz + 1gb ram + 160gb hdd + 10” screen + xp
150 - canon powershot a1000is - 10mp + 4x optical zoom + 2.5” lcd
200 - 4g nano 16gb black - all the music i own + tons of videos + a higher-res screen than my treo + eminently pocketable
a netbook isn’t something i can carry on my person easily, but i’m not going to be taking advantage of a wifi signal during the majority of my day either. cellular internet is still a long way from always-on, unlimited data plans where you can simply pull out your phone, hit google, and load up a page in anything like a practical amount of time.
i think within five years we’re going to see, even just at the highest end of the market, a mobile phone that rivals netbooks for speed and performance. i don’t know that we actually need a phone running xp instead of windows mobile, but with a decent size screen i’d certainly give it a whirl. to hell with the app store and suchlike. firefox, notepad, itunes, and half-life. that’s all i need.
